A diagnosis is the classification of a specific type of cancer. The diagnosis, and following staging, is important in helping your physician determine your treatment options.
- T = tumor size
- N = number of lymph nodes to which the cancer has spread
- M = metastasis or whether the cancer has spread to distant organs and tissues
These three pieces are used to determine a stage for your cancer. Stages range from 0 to 4, with lower numbers indicating your cancer is less widespread. Higher numbers typically indicate a more advanced disease.
